Modular Quilted Seat (ing)
Canvas, Nylon, Dense Foam, Industrial Straps,
and Steel Buckles
Made in Collaboration with Lieyah Dagan
Fall 2024
A 3D quilt that can be rearranged to create different seating orientations, featuring straps that can be woven through pockets to secure positions. As a collaborative project we wanted to explore our shared interest in taking 2d patterns and transforming them into 3d structures, inspired by our backgrounds in paper engineering and sewing. By applying quilting techniques to furniture design, we created a structured yet lighthearted piece that invites users to explore, adapt, and engage intuitively. This modular seating is perfect for creating additional seating for someone living in a smaller space.
Models, Growing in Scale
Quickly made with fabric and scrabble pieces, this was the key model in developing our idea.
Quarter scale: Complicated, hard to use, and ugly.
Quater scale: Simplified, but lost our goals and function.
Quater scale: Happy medium that aligned with our goals, moved back to original layout.
Full scale: Realized our design was still bulky and hard to maneuver at this scale, adjusted our plan based off these findings.
